Statement of Purpose

This is to update you on our work regarding the City's proposed Cultural Heritage Ordinance.

We've been working together with a number of interested parties to come up with common sense revisions to the ordinance, to make it a more balanced and fairer approach for historic property owners.

As you may know, the ordinance as originally drafted by the Cultural Heritage Commission makes sweeping changes and imposes significant new burdens or historic property owners. Worse, owners received no prior formal notice from the City or chance to provide input when the law was being written. The City originally planned for the ordinance to be approved at the Planning Commission meeting on February 16th, which was then rescheduled for March 12th.

Thanks to our efforts and the large turnout at the Cultural Heritage workshop on March 4th, the hearing at the Planning Commision has been rescheduled again to May 14th. Please mark that important date on your calendar.

In the meantime, we are attempting to rewrite the ordinance. If you have any specific concerns or suggestions regarding the proposed ordinance, please email or write us. Your input is very important. Most of us have had negative experiences dealing with the City…if you’ve had a problem regarding your historic property, please share it with us. Your experiences can help us draft a better law.
We want to make sure the final ordinance truly reflects the concerns of owners. There are about 950 designated historic properties in Los Angeles. We deserve to have a significant voice in a law that will directly affect us for many years to come.

If you are contacted by the City regarding the ordinance or your historic property, please let us know. We all need to stick together.
If you need to know your City Councilmember's name, contact us.
Our's is a grass roots organization. You can help it grow. If you know anyone who would support our efforts, please let us know.
